Ikeda 20th Century Museum
About Ikeda Museum of 20th Century Art
Opened in 1975, it is Japan’s first museum specializing in contemporary art. Designed by sculptor Bukichi Inoue, the exterior walls of the exhibition rooms are clad in Japan’s first stainless steel. From the entrance to the exit, it features a unique spatial design with organically connected spaces. It houses approximately 1,400 paintings and sculptures created in the 20th century, primarily themed around “humanity,” and permanently exhibits about 80 masterpieces and outstanding works by foreign masters such as Renoir, Picasso, Miró, Dali, Chagall, Matisse, and Warhol. Special exhibitions are also held every three months.
